Elmer August Sundermann, age 78 years, passed away September 27, 2007, at his home, in Council Bluffs.
Elmer was born December 12, 1928, in Treynor, Iowa, to Fritz and Magdalena (Kaiser) Sundermann. Elmer graduated in 1948 from Treynor High School and served two years in the U.S. Army. He graduated in 1955 from Boyles VanSant Business School. He farmed and was a U.S. Postal carrier, retiring in 1989. He was a confirmed member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Treynor, until 1954, when he transferred to Saint John Lutheran Church, in Council Bluffs. He was a member of the German American Society, Omaha, Neb., driver for Meals on Wheels, and a volunteer at MOHM's.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, and brother and sister-in-law, Rudolph and Barbara Kruger Sundermann.
He is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Catherine Kruger Sundermann, Council Bluffs; daughter, Christine A. Sundermann, Auburn, Ala.; son, CSM John P. Sundermann, stationed with the U.S. Army at Illesheim, Germany; nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be Monday, 6-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral services, Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at Saint John Lutheran Church, 633 Willow Ave., Council Bluffs, with Rev. E. Jon Benson and Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Luncheon will follow at the church. Cortege will depart from church at 1 p.m. for Plumer Settlement Cemetery, for burial. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Rainbow Post No. 2.
