GLENWOOD—Walter H. Green, 84, of Glenwood died Jan. 15 at Glen Haven Home.
He was born in Council Bluffs. He previously lived in Pacific Junction, moving to Glenwood 22 years ago. He was a 1934 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School, and then he farmed for six years before he became employed as a switchman on the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1940. He retired in 1978. He was a member of Pacific Junction United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, and Brotherhood Railroad Trainman. He was a former member of Glen Haven Board and Kiwanis, and he was active in many organizations throughout the years.
Mr. Green and his wife, Norma, were married 62 years.
Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Sally Grantham and husband, Douglas, of Denver, Janice Zito and husband, David, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Kathryn Biermann and husband, Richard, of Glenwood; one sister, Helen Hill, and husband, William, of Elizabeth, Colo.; one brother, Richard W., of Council Bluffs; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Peterson Mortuary in Glenwood. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Lynn Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Plumer Settlement Cemetery in Mills County.
Memorials may be offered to Pacific Junction United Methodist Church or Glen Haven Home.
Walter H. Green, 84, of Glenwood, died Jan. 15, 2002, at the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood. Funeral services were held Jan. 19, 2002, at the Peterson Mortuary. Pastor Lynn Zimmerman officiated at the services.
Mr. Green was the son of William Detlef and Theresa Mary (Brandt) Green, born Oct. 16, 1917, in Council Bluffs. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. Following his graduation, he farmed with his uncle for six years before becoming employed with the Burlington Northern Railraod as a switchman in 1940. He married Norma Louise (Bruce) Green on Aug. 30, 1939, in Rockport, Mo. He retired in 1978 and moved to Glenwood shortly after that.
Mr. Green was a member of the Pacific Junction United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, and Brotherhood RR Trainman. He was also a former Kiwanis member and former member of the Glen Haven Board. He was active in various organizations throughout the years and volunteered his time wherever help was needed. His hobbies included gardening and woodworking.
Mr. Green is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathryn Green. He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Glenwood; daughters, Evelyn (Sally) and husband, Douglas Grantham, of Denver, Colo., Janice and husband, David Zito, of Carlsbad, Calif., Kathryn and husband, Richard Biermann, of Glenwood; grandchildren, Jill and husband, Darren Kinder, Jason Grantham, Kellie Zito, Matt and wife, Kendra Biermann, and Ann Biermann, great-grandchild, Sydney Biermann; brother, Richard W. Green of Council Bluffs; sister, Helen and husband, William Hill, of Elizabeth, Colo.; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Pacific Junction United Methodist Church and the Glen Haven Home. Peterson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
